What to expect at Antenatal Classes

Have you heard the term but unsure what it actually is? Wondering what the difference is between NCT and Parent Club? Well you’re in the right place!

Antenatal classes are there for parents-to-be to attend before they have their baby. They usually help the birthing person and partner prepare for the birth itself, as well as how to care for a newborn baby and what to expect in the postnatal period. There’ll be some learning to do about hormones and how labour progresses, as well as practical activities often involving a baby doll and a nappy! Most people sign up for the social aspect too as it’s a great way to meet other parents going through the same life-changing period at the same time.

The NHS used to run free in-person ones, however these have mainly moved online (at least in the Manchester area - unsure about other trusts) so parents aren’t getting the chance to build a community and meet other people in the same way. This has resulted in more private and independent companies running antenatal classes.

You may have heard of some of the larger companies such as NCT, who are the National Childbirth Trust - one of the original antenatal class providers. However, at Parent Club, not only do you get up to date, antenatal education from qualified professionals, but you also get that local knowledge and independent support.
